Come to the UK & undertake employment here with a Global Talent Visa (Exceptional Talent visa previously)

Global Talent visa is a category that allows a limited number of people who are considered to be leaders or emerging leaders in a small number of fields to enter the UK. You must be endorsed in one of these fields: science, humanities, engineering, medicine, digital technology or the arts.

According to the statement of changes to the Immigration Rules, effective 20 February 2020, the Tier 1 – Exceptional Talent Visa has now been replaced by the Global Talent Visa.

You may be able to apply for a Global Talent Visa if:

  • you are a recognised leader (exceptional talent);
  • you are an emerging leader (exceptional promise);
  • you have a Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) endorsement

In addition, current holders of Tier 1 – Exceptional Talent Visa can still apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (settlement) or for family members to join them in the United Kingdom under this category. However, kindly note that for extension, you will need to apply for a Global Talent Visa instead.

You can apply for settlement once you have been in the UK for:

  • 3 years with an exceptional talent visa
  • 3 years with an exceptional talent endorsement in science
  • 5 years with an exceptional promise endorsement in either arts and culture or digital technology

Overview of the Global Talent Visa

The Global Talent Visa is your gateway to working in the UK if you’re an exceptionally skilled individual in fields like science, technology, the arts, or research. It’s designed to attract the best and brightest from around the world, and it grants you a significant degree of freedom.

With this visa, you can work for established companies, launch your own ventures, or pursue a mixture of projects – it’s your choice.

Advantages Over Other UK Work Visas

The UK offers a range of work visas, but the Global Talent Visa stands apart by removing barriers for those with recognised expertise. Unlike other options, it doesn’t tie you down or confine your ambitions.

  • No Job Offer Needed: Most skilled worker visas depend on you securing a job offer from a UK-based employer willing to sponsor you. The Global Talent Visa flips the script – you can arrive ready to explore opportunities without being tied to one specific company.
  • Flexibility: Change jobs, work on multiple projects simultaneously, even start businesses with ease. This visa gives you the space to build the UK career you envision.
  • Speed (Potentially): While no visa process is lightning-fast, Global Talent Visa applications can be prioritised if you have strong credentials, potentially leading to a decision sooner than other visa types.

Simply put, the Global Talent Visa grants you a level of freedom and control over your career trajectory that’s unmatched by other UK work visa options. If you possess the talent, this could be your passport to an exceptional professional experience in the UK.

Global Talent Visa Eligibility: Endorsement Process

Gaining a Global Talent Visa often starts with proving your worth to specialised talent evaluators. The UK government relies on six endorsing bodies to act as gatekeepers, ensuring only the truly exceptional gain this coveted visa. Let’s break down how their process works.

  • The Endorsing Bodies: Think of these as specialised “talent scouts.” There are six official UK endorsing bodies, each specialising in a different field (i.e., The Royal Society for Science, Tech Nation for digital technology). Their job is to rigorously assess if you demonstrate leading talent or exceptional promise.
  • How It Works: You’ll submit an application directly to the endorsing body relevant to your field. This involves showcasing your achievements and providing things like a detailed CV, relevant publications, reference letters, and potentially examples of your work. Be thorough – their assessment will determine your eligibility for the visa.
  • The “Fast Track” (Eligible Awards): Have you won a major, internationally-recognised award in your field? Prestigious awards like those on the official Home Office lists can allow you to bypass the endorsement process and apply for the visa directly.

Whether you go through the full endorsement process or have an award that speaks for itself, the Global Talent Visa system has one goal: to identify the best of the best from across the globe. Understanding these endorsing bodies and their roles is essential for anyone considering this visa route.

Eligible Fields

The eligible fields currently consist of:

  • Science (including engineering, humanities, and medicine)
  • Digital Technology
  • Arts and Culture (including film, fashion design, and architecture)

Within each field, there are two paths – one for established leaders with a proven track record and a separate path for those showing exceptional promise early in their careers. Don’t be discouraged if you’re just starting out.

Eligible Awards

The UK government maintains official lists of prizes that qualify you for the direct visa application route. You can find these on the .gov.uk website. Note that the prominence and prestige of the award matter – it needs to be clear evidence of your exceptional talent.

Global Talent Visa Application

While the specifics may change slightly, the core of the Global Talent Visa application is done online through the UK government’s portal. Here’s what it generally entails:

  • Creating an Account: This is your first step for most UK visas; setting up a simple account is where your information is stored.
  • Finding the Right Form: Ensure you’re selecting the specific application form for the Global Talent Visa. Don’t worry; the system will guide you based on your answers to initial questions.
  • Filling It Out Thoroughly: Expect sections about your personal details, work history, and why you believe you qualify for the visa. If you’ve obtained endorsement, this is where you’ll provide details.
  • Uploading Documents: Digital copies of your supporting documents (listed below) will need to be uploaded.
  • Fee Payment: The fee will need to be paid as part of the online process.
  • Biometrics (Usually): In most cases, you’ll be asked to provide your fingerprints and photograph at an official center. This isn’t an assessment, just for identity verification.

The online application is a big step, but it’s not the end of the journey. Depending on your specific circumstances, you may need to schedule your biometrics appointment and keep track of important dates regarding your visa decision.

Common Documentation

Preparing these documents in advance will streamline your application. You’ll likely need a CV that goes beyond a generic summary, tailoring it to emphasise projects, publications, or awards that directly demonstrate your exceptional talent in your specific field.

Additionally, gather strong reference letters from credible figures who understand your work and can outline your specific contributions and impact. If applicable to your field, prepare examples of your work – an architect might include a design portfolio, while a software engineer could provide code samples.

Naturally, you’ll also need your passport and any previous visas, along with tuberculosis test results, if required, based on your country of origin.

Financial Considerations

Let’s be upfront about the costs involved. The visa fees themselves are divided into two payments if you need an endorsement; otherwise, it’s a single payment. In total, expect to pay around £700.

Additionally, there’s the mandatory healthcare surcharge, which grants you access to the NHS. This cost varies based on the length of your visa, but it’s typically over £1,000 per year.

Finally, if any of your documents are not in English or Welsh, you’ll need to factor in the cost of certified translations.
